Plowman and Fletcher tango into the sunset with a comfortable GT4 ProAm championship win

In today’s final round of the 2019 British GT Championship, ‘Pro’ racer Martin Plowman and his ‘Am’ team-mate, Kelvin Fletcher, of Strictly Come Dancing fame, took home the Championship silverware. The pair had a strong race in their Aston Martin GT4, leading the ProAm class throughout the session. The win in class was accompanied by fourth position overall in the GT4 category and the pair were crowned popular 2019 class champions.

Driving the first 60-minute stint, Kelvin started with the race under the safety car. However, he then quickly found his pace and enjoyed some great opening laps. Although leading the ProAm field from the outset, he gained position with some overtakes on other GT4 cars but was careful to hand the car over to teammate, Martin, in the best possible health. Martin spent the majority of his stint in close contention with other ProAm Championship hopefuls, with the number 77 Balfe Motorsport McLaren 570S GT4 being piloted by Broadhurst behind him, closely followed by the number 20 of O’Brien; the duo’s nearest rival. Further into his stint, Martin overtook several GT4S class cars, and was close on the heels of the Canning/Hand TF Sport Aston Martin GT4. Although having the pace to continue to climb up the field, Martin was aware that Canning and Hand needed the position to win their championship, resulting in a double victory for the Aston Martin brand within the GT4 category.

Speaking after the race, Martin Plowman said ‘We came into the weekend with both everything to lose and everything to gain, so today’s approach was about getting the job done correctly and making sure we went past the 70% race distance mark in order to score the points we needed. I am, of course, delighted with the Championship win and, now it’s over, am looking forward to tonight’s celebrations. Driving with Kelvin this season with the Beechdean AMR team has been fantastic and today’s result is testament to that. I’d like to thank all of our sponsors for their wonderful support and we look forward to working again together next season.’

Kelvin Fletcher added ‘It was such a relief to hand the car over first in class; for the last six laps my tyres were rapidly dying on me and all I wanted to do was bring it home. Like Martin, I was completely focused on a clean and safe race to secure the Championship so was perhaps more conservative than I have been at other races this season. But it paid off because we won! I couldn’t be happier and what a wonderful journey it’s been! Sincere thanks to everyone who has made it happen, particularly Imagine Cruising for their unfailing support at all the races and with all the fans. Until 2020…!’
